Mountain Pansy
The following plants were photographed at Wem Moss which is a nature reserve
located in North Shropshire. They are growing on a raised bog which is now very
rare habitat. The "raised bog" develops on peat produced by Sphagnum moss. This moss
can be seen on some of the Sundew photographs. The centre of the bog becomes
raised above the surrounding land, the sphagnum moss being able to absorb and retain
moisture from the atmosphere.
Round Leaved Sundew
The sphagnum peat is acid and lacks plant nutrients. The sundews have adapted to this
by catching insects to provide the necessary nutients.
Small insects are trapped on sticky globules at the end of leaf hairs.
